John M. Bixler’s practice includes matters involving transfer (estate, generation-skipping, and gift) taxes, trust and estate administration, exempt organizations, and tax and general trust and estate litigation. He advises and represents individuals, fiduciaries, and private foundations with respect to estate planning and administration matters, income, foundation excise, and transfer taxes.  He represented non-resident professionals practicing in the District of Columbia and was successful in having the District’s commuter tax declared invalid, resulting in refunds totaling in excess of thirty million dollars.

Mr. Bixler is a member of the District of Columbia Bar, the Bar Association of the
District of Columbia, and the Maryland State, Federal, and American Bar Associations (a member of the Section of Taxation Council, 1979-1982, former Chairman of National Office Committee and Assistant Secretary). Mr. Bixler is a  Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel and of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (Regent, 1987-1994; District of Columbia State Chair, 1983-1987; Estate and Gift Tax Committee, 1977 to 2004; Fiduciary Income Tax Committee, 2004 to present;  Washington Representative 1987-2002; and was for 13 years co-author of the ”Washington Report” column in the ACTEC Journal (ACTEC’s quarterly publication).  He is a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation  and is listed in  Best Lawyers in  America and Who’s Who in America.
